Tommy Grimes, former NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley champion and the Mid-Continent Motorsports Team added another title to their list, Top Fuel winner at the AHDRA Screamin’ Eagle Race at The Rally Presented by Pingel. This wildly popular event is a win that no racer will forget. Grimes defeated Phil Schmidt of Orangevale, CA in the finals with a great hole shot. His winning numbers 4.719 seconds at 157.38 mph on the infamous Sturgis Dragway 1/8 mile.
Grimes and team also took Top Fuel #1 qualifier but Grimes was not the only winner on the Mid-Continent Motorsports Team. Mike Bahnmaier, Wichita, KN, team owner, dusted off his leathers and saddled up for the Rush Pro Fuel class where he captured #1 qualifier and WON his event, too. In the finals, Bahnmaier took out Terry Stewart, Orange, CA with a 4.814 sceonds at 156.74 mph over Stewart’s 5.166 seconds at 128.83 mph.
And yes, there is more. Bahnmaier wanted it all. His winning continued in the Kresto Pro Drag Class where he took out Kirby Apathy of Bloomington, IN. Bahnmaier won by .01 of a second, with a 5.056 seconds at 141.03 mph over Apathy breathing down his neck at 5.070 seconds at 138.90. What a race!
And since there was another “spare” race bike, team member and infamous racer of the 70’s and early 80’s Freddie Robbins of Robbins Performance of Clemmons, NC renewed his competition license and made several rounds in the Kresto Pro Dragster Class. I suspect they were all still grinning as they made the long haul to Bristol, TN to compete at the AHDRA Rush Thunder In The Valley Nationals Presented by Smith Brothers Harley-Davidson. Grimes performed well making it to the semi’s before a hurt motor stopped their opportunity to win.
Next, Grimes goes home for 4 days before flying back to Wichita, KN to compete at the Truett and Osborn, powerhouse drag race event of the Midwest.
