> Due to weather, Cox was only able to make one pass during test and tune Friday afternoon. With only two rounds of qualifying Saturday, Cox was number four. After a first round win over Rocky Jackson, Cox advanced to the semi-finals and came up against Pro Fuel Champion Doug Horne. Horne bested Cox with a 6.786 ET at 203.03 mph to Cox’s 7.156 ET at 185.79 mph. Horne went all the way to capture the Pro Fuel class victory.

> “We had a great bike at Bristol,” said Mark Cox, a North Carolina native. “The conditions were challenging with high temperatures and a lot of humidity in the air. We just didn’t have the tune-up we wanted on the bike. We couldn’t quite get it to run through the quarter mile without dropping holes. We still made it to the semi-finals though.

> “I didn’t get back into the over 200 mph club this past weekend,” added Cox. “But I had a very positive experience working with the Romines. I enjoyed partnering with Jack and being back on an injection bike. We hope to be able to work together again for the Rockingham race on October 13-14 and are working towards that goal.”

> Monday after Bristol, NHRA announced the formation of the NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship Motorcycle Series, a 10-race series that will compete at NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional events beginning in 2013. The Series will offer a total purse of $152,800 and will feature five classes: Top Fuel, Pro Gas, Draggin’ Bagger, Street Pro, and Hot Street. The classes will run in addition to the Sportsman ET Motorcycle class that currently competes at various NHRA divisional events.

> “I was really excited to hear about the new NHRA championship series for next season,” said Cox. “This gives Harley racers a new opportunity to compete, in addition to the six races that AHDRA is planning to offer in 2013.”
