A Valuable Lesson to Be Learned on Social Media

Jack Korpela KZ 1000

Here is a story I would like to share for everyone’s benefit.

I got a call this week and was informed a NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle team was potentially searching for a rider to add to the team and completely disqualified someone they were considering after observing the extreme negativity he was posting on Facebook. I’m told they saw several profanity-laden, unprofessional posts bashing others that go back several years. Friends, colleagues, co-workers, media, this guy took shots at them all.

I’m baffled as to why a very minuscule group of grown adults feel the need to do this. Is it to make themselves feel better for some area of unhappiness or inadequacy in their lives? The important thing to remember is even if you are cracking up your “peanut gallery” of a few dozen on Facebook, never discount which sponsor or team may be watching and not “liking” or reacting. Even if your posts are private, never discount who may be taking screenshots and passing them on. Question your own motives and what you really aim to accomplish.

It’s a real shame, because I know this rider had a dream to compete on the NHRA tour and it seems he completely squandered an opportunity without even knowing it.

When Wes Buck of Drag Illustrated announced the 30 Under 30 a few years ago, he said there were many strong candidates that had to be disqualified because they could not keep the F word or the harsh bashing off their page. Don’t be that racer. Don’t blow a dream for short-term satisfaction.

Show that top-level team or potential sponsor you have the intelligence and enough control over your emotions to put your best foot forward. When you think you are bashing someone else, you may just be bashing yourself.

Fly high and go get that sponsor and championship you have been dreaming of. Some racers wonder why they fall short of their goals. Keep your focus in the right place and you can get what you desire!

Keep racing into the light.
