Smith’s ‘Hometown’ Race Comes at Good Time

In the last four months, Angie Smith’s travels have taken her to Joliet, Ill., Englishtown, N.J., Norwalk, Ohio, Sonoma, Calif., Denver, Brainerd, Minn., and Indianapolis – all stops in NHRA’s Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

This week, Smith and her husband Matt will have a much shorter drive – about 90 miles – from their King, N.C. home to zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C., near Charlotte, for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals, Sept. 17-19.

“We aren’t close enough to sleep in our own beds, but I’m excited because there will be a bunch of family and friends coming to the race,” said Angie Smith, driver of the Karl and Kim Klement-owned Coffman Tank Trucks Pro Stock V-Twin motorcycle “We don’t have many races where they can come out and watch us.

“Two of my sponsors – J.D. and Terrisa Coffman – are also coming to this race.”

This is Angie’s second visit to the track this year. She qualified for the inaugural Four-Wide Nationals in March and lost in the first round. Matt, however, won the event.

She is determined to rebound following her disappointing non-qualifying effort two weeks ago at Indianapolis. “We learned from that and we have moved on,” she said. “We put the Marrelli fuel injection system back on my bike and I think we can put on a good show this weekend.

“We are still in test mode for next year. We are going to do our best in the next five races.”
