What began as a plan for an all-red Harley-Davidson became a four-year custom build with a deeply personal purpose. Purchased new, this 2001 Road King Classic was transformed in stages into a September 11 memorial. Its owner lost a close friend and others he knew in the attacks. His brother later passed away from health complications related to the attacks, adding another personal connection to the tribute.

The original idea was straightforward: red bodywork, a red frame, and extensive polished metal. After September 11, the project evolved. Ideas from the owner, builder, painter, and machinist helped shape a motorcycle filled with individually crafted details and references to the firefighters who responded that day.

Steve of Steve’s Cycles handled the mechanical work and overall customization, while a Lewisville-based custom painter completed the bodywork and paint. The vivid red finish carries flame accents across the tank, fenders, side covers, and hard saddlebags. Shaved bodywork and concealed wiring give the bike a clean, uncluttered appearance.
The engine remains largely stock internally apart from upgraded cams. Diamond-cut cylinder fins, extensive chrome and polished finishes, and a Hypercharger intake distinguish the engine bay. Wiring and hoses are concealed or neatly finished with protective sleeving and stainless braiding. Custom handlebars incorporate internal routing, complemented by a hydraulic clutch and custom controls.

American Wire Wheel big-spoke wheels are paired with matching custom brake rotors and a rear pulley. Legend air suspension provides switch-operated rear ride-height adjustment, with replacement rear shocks installed approximately 18 months ago.
The custom exhaust is among the build’s most distinctive features. Developed from fishtail pipes, it incorporates firefighter axe motifs with yellow handles and custom-machined aluminum heads. A fire-hydrant detail adds another reference to the memorial theme, while sculptural mirrors, a custom kickstand, and carefully selected trim continue the detail work throughout the motorcycle.

Red accent lighting beneath the tank, around the fenders, and beneath the saddlebags illuminates the engine and chassis after dark. A Gunslinger seat completes the bike’s low profile.

Showing 1,798 miles, the motorcycle is in excellent cosmetic and operating condition. It starts, runs, and rides properly, and the air suspension operates correctly and holds its height. Regular oil changes have accompanied its limited use.
Built over four years, this extensively customized Road King Classic combines elaborate craftsmanship with a memorial that remains deeply personal. It’s an honor to share this intentional machine. God bless America.
