Larry “Drums” Brancaccio continues to recover from an accident where he ran off the end of the drag strip during Nitro Harley qualifying at the Nitro Jam Summer Nationals at Cordova International Raceway in Cordova, Ill., May 29.
The dragike legend Brancaccio, 57, of Nutley, N.J. underwent successful surgery to repair fractures sustained during the high-speed crash and was released from the hospital a couple weeks later.
Drums’ good friend Mary Lou Brewton reports the veteran racer continues to improve. She sent along the following report.
“He is on a positive path, working hard with his therapist, and on his own. In the last few days, he’s been keeping track of his sit-ups,” Brewton wrote.
Brancaccio does the sit-ups in his bed and is up to over 1,200 a day.
The innovative and competitive drag racer qualities of Drums have not been diminished.
“His doctor told him he can start to put weight on the foot that has the hard cast on it, but since his floors are all linoleum there was no friction between the flooring and the cast. So you know Drums,” wrote Brewton. “He first tried attaching a heel from a boot to the heel of the cast with double sided tape. That didn’t work, so one of his best friends customized a sneaker for him.”
