Brock Breaks 200 mph on 2008 Hayabusa

Below are some notes from owner of Brock's Performance Products, Brock Davidson, regarding his on-going diagnosis of the 2008 Hayabusa and its capabilities.  Here the team prepares the machine for a trip down the famed Maxton Mile land speed race track in North Carolina.

We are heading to Maxton after just returning from a 10 day exhaust development trip in Canada. Special thanks to Lang Hindle and company for working with us to come up with a stunning new system which meets all of our stringent Brock’s Performance design criteria of power, look, sound, weight savings coupled with additional ground clearance for drag racing. I believe this is the best system we have ever made.

I have included a sneak peak of our dyno results from the last couple of days.

We started testing all over again once we arrived back home because we added the Alisyn oil at Atco and needed to test with a known pump gas.

Here are brief explanations of the dyno runs:

RunFile_009.drf = 2008 Busa_after Atco -- all stock w/ 89 Octane pump

RunFile_081.drf = 2008 Busa_before Maxton -- Alien Head Exhaust, no air cleaner, PC3USB map, and MR9 fuel

Here are the current modifications to Chronic :

  1. Brock’s Performance Alien Head Exhaust System
  2. Dynojet power commander IIIusb with Brock’s “Maxton” map
  3. Dave O prepped Innovate aux box kit ( LM1 Basic + LMA-3)
  4. Brock’s Performance “bare necessities” drag race kit
  5. World Wide Bearings ceramic wheel bearing kit with low tension seals and aerospace lubricant.
  6. Richie’s Tires/Michelin pilot power race 120/60 front 190/55 rear
    (Stock tires are Bridgestone Battlax BT015 120/70 front and 190/50 rear)

  7. Ohlins Hayabusa (99-07) top mount steering stabilizer kit
  8. Vortex sprockets (stock 18-43 ratio) for GSX-R1000 rear wheel
  9. Spiegler brake lines
  10. Regina ZRP Series “Brock modified” chain
  11. Chicken Hawk tire warmer
  12. Tiger Racing  “Brock modified” aluminum chain guard
  13. Schnitz Racing (Brock Modified) billet triple tree (top clamp plate)

 All else is stock except oil (Alisyn less than zero weight) and VP MR9 fuel.

Some stock items were removed  (no air cleaner) to save weight or as instructed by tech for safety reasons at Maxton etc. FYI: the stock exhaust system weighs 47 pounds?! (The Alien head system weights a little less than 10 lbs.) We have not cut the seat or added any front end ballast. We are still foot-shifting with stock wheelbase.

Pictured here from left to right are veteran sportbike racer Lee Sheirts, Brock Davidson, and Maxton record holder Dave "O" Owens.

The team enjoyed a successful outing as Sheirts recorded a top speed of 202 mph, and Davidson ran 201 mph.

It’s Sunday night after this weekend’s Maxton event, and we are at Lee Shiert’s house outside of Charlotte, NC where Lee and is lovely wife, Dawn, are showing us some much needed southern hospitality.

Every race has a its own story, and this weekend marks the second national event in three weeks which we have attended with the brand new 2008 Busa that we have affectionately named Chronic.

Here is the breakdown:

  1. We REALLY struggled on Saturday due to mistakes made on MY part before we arrived at the event (LONG STORY!) I had spoken to Dave Owen previously about asking Lee to help us with the bike. When Lee heard we were having trouble, he jumped in his Corvette and made the 2 hour drive to Maxton ready to race on Sunday morning.
  2. I made the first pass on Sunday after we all worked late into the night to cure Saturday’s problems. The changes worked, but I still only ran 195.06 MPH. I was at a loss and needed a break to think about tuning (deja vu?)
  3. Lee’s very first pass was 200.66 MPH after the new changes were made.
  4. Lee’s second pass after additional changes netted 202.57 MPH, and the data logger said there was even more.
  5. I decide that I needed another shot as time was running out and the tuning changes were obviously going in the correct direction. I managed a ‘monkey off my back’ 201.31 MPH!!!!
